Madder is a common forage plant for grazing animals that is found in pastures and other undisturbed places throughout Europe and the Mediterranean region. The root of the plant has been used for over 3,000 years to produce a red dye, which is why the herb is also known as Dyer’s Madder. Because this coloring agent is readily absorbed by bone, it was once used as a marker to observe bone growth in animals. While madder root yields a reddish-orange color in either water or alcohol, the use of different mordants produces other colors, including yellow, brown, varying shades of pink and purple and even black. The earliest example of Madder Root used as a dye was a dyed linen found in the tomb of King Tutankhamen from 1350 BCE.  The Vikings dyed wool with it, it was a popular silk dye in the Middle Ages, and it colored the British Redcoats’ outer wear.  It can also dye cotton, bast, plant fibers including paper, wood, and leather.  It is weak, but repeated applications can make deep shades.  Depending on the mordant, water temperature (higher makes browner), and age of the root when harvested, it can produce orange, red (tin), purple, or yellow dye. Madder root is used to color soaps and cosmetics. In India, it has been used to redden lips and cheeks.  It also has a 2,000-year history as a medicinal herb in China, India, and ancient Greece for breaking kidney stones (it’s a diuretic), to promote the flow of menses, cure jaundice, and because of its high tannin content, for various intestinal problems. In Europe, it was used to dye urine and bones for medicinal purposes.  It is antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. Historical Uses:  dye, kidney stones, menstrual disorders, urinary tract disorders, wound healing, jaundice, intestinal problems, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, blood disorders, bruises, paralysis, spleen disorders, sciatica Mystical Attributes:   The Druids incorporated Maddar Root into girls’ coming-of-age ceremonies, probably because of its blood color. Maddar root with powdered Iron rust makes a good dye for wands and ink. Mystical Intentions:  coming of age ceremonies, magical dye Taste & Smell:  Maddar root has a rich earthy sweet smell. The taste is astringent. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:   Madder is native to the Old World, Africa, temperate Asia and America. The best European Madder is Dutch.  Madder from Smyrna is better. Maddar can grow up to 1.5 meters in height (about 5 feet). Its evergreen leaves are approximately 5-10 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, and are produces in whorls of 4-7 star like around the sacral stem. The plant has tiny hooks at the leaves and stems that allow it to be a climbing herb. Madder flowers are small (3–5 mm across), with five pale yellow petals, in dense racemes. They bloom from June to August and are followed by small (4–6 mm diameter) red-to-black berries. The roots of the Madder plant can be over a meter long, up to 12 mm thick. Madder grows in full sun, often found in waste spaces, hedgerows or cultivated beds. It prefers loamy soils, soils of sand and clay, with a constant level of moisture. Seeds should be sown in a cold frame as soon as ripe, since stored seed can be very slow to germinate. Once large enough to handle, the seedlings can be transplanted and grown in light shade in the greenhouse for the first year. They can be planted out into their permanent garden locations in the early summer. If kept well-watered until established, divisions can take place in spring or at any time during the growing season. Larger divisions can be planted out directly into their permanent garden locations. Madder roots are harvested in the autumn from plants that are at least 3 years old. They are peeled and then dried, also ground into powder. Store dried Madder root in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. Madder stimulates menstruation and may cause miscarriage and birth defects. Can be unsafe and may cause cancer. Can cause urine, saliva, perspiration, tears, and breast milk to turn red in color.
