In the 19th century, limes were used by the British naval soldiers to treat scurvy. Lime essential oil is extracted from the fruit peel by cold-press or steam distillation. In aromatherapy, lime essential oil’s fresh sweet citrusy aroma is refreshing and energizing, and can help relieve fatigue and lethargy, uplift mood, and improve memory and mental clarity, focus, and concentration. Limes are high in vitamin C, which helps the body produce collagen. Lime juice and essential oil can reduce signs of aging and boost collagen. Lime also has natural bleaching properties that can lighten dark and age spots, dark circles, and hyperpigmentation. Lime juice and lime essential oil has antiseptic and antifungal properties that can help reduce dandruff and other scalp irritations. It must be kept a secret, you must tell no one. Ever wonder why it’s customary to keep a bowl of 7 fresh limes inside the front door or on the kitchen table or counter? This is a tradition passed down from HooDoo to keep negative forces from passing through your home. To remove dark malevolent energies and entities from the home, peel lime skin and red onion skin together. Burn the skins on hot charcoal in a censor, and recite a banishing chant while smudging the home working from the back to the front of the house. Keep a fresh lime in the glove box or trunk of your car to protect it from accidents, theft or vandalism. In Yoruban tradition, to remove stagnancy and being “stuck” in life, place either 3, 7, 9, or 21 fresh juicy limes in a bucket. Add warm water and a little sea salt, being especially careful not to spill any salt. One at a time, squeeze the juice of each lime into the water, then place them back in the bucket. Say your intentional prayer for being freed from the past over the mixture. Between 5:30-6:30am (at dawn), stand in the bathtub and scrub your body (including the head) with the strained limes while praying, but do not drop the limes back into the bucket after scrubbing. Drop the used limes into the bathtub. When finished, allow your body and hair to air dry, do not use a towel. And wait an hour before cleaning the bathroom. Lime trees have been given as a sympathy and memorial gift when someone experiences the loss of a loved one. I you have an infant or child that is having trouble sleeping, set a bowl with a couple of fresh cut limes near their bed. In Germanic folklore, lime trees are associated with romance and are considered a lovers tree. In Celtic and Germanic tradition, limes are believed to inspire truth, fairness, and justice. As such, evidence in trials was heard beneath a lime. Mystical Intentions: home protection, protection from accidents, protection from theft, security, letting go of the past, new beginnings, renewal, loss of a loved one, bereavement, children, sleeping, romance, fairness, truth, justice, luck in court Smell: A medium, crisp, fresh, sweet, tangy, fruity, citrus aroma. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Lime trees are relatively easy to grow from seed, but can also be purchased in a container. They are self-pollinations, so there is no need to plant multiple trees for the sake of pollination. Grow lime trees at the back of a large border, or as a standalone feature in a lawn. Somewhere it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. The trees are hardy in USDA zones 7-12 (or in an all-season room or greenhouse), and will not tolerate temperatures below 50°F. Lime trees grow best in moist but well-drained soil. The tree will die if it does not have excellent drainage. It should never be exposed to standing water. Make sure the soil around the tree is a little higher than the ground outside the planting hole to prevent pooling of water. When backfilling the hole or container, make sure the soil is firmly in place around the root ball. If a pocket of air is created, the tree will die. Tamp the soil continually or water every few inches while backfilling. If left dry for too long, lime trees will drop their leaves and die. However, too much watering will kill them as well. Water consistently but not obsessively. Lime trees are heavy feeders so need to be frequently fertilized. They will quickly deplete the soil around them, in the ground or in a container. Fertilize every few months with compost or nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Stake the tree in the first two years. Water in the first few weeks to help it become established and then in periods of drought for the following two years. For the first few years, prune only to remove damaged or crossing branches, or to even out its shape. Once established, there should be no need to prune. Some species of lime trees have a tendency to produce suckers from the base of the tree. Simply remove these once a year. Harvest the lime fruits when they are a lighter green color, smooth, and slightly soft when gently squeezed. Contraindications & Toxicity: When eaten in high quantities, or the juice drunk frequently, acidic limes can damage tooth enamel. Flush the mouth with water after eating or drinking. Do not use if allergic to limes or other citrus fruits. Use lime juice on skin with caution. Its high acidity can be harsh on sensitive skin if used undiluted. Lime essential oil should always be properly diluted before use. Avoid direct sun exposure when using lime juice or lime essential oil, as it can cause a phototoxic reaction called phytophotodermatitis when exposed to UV light, resulting in rash or burn.
