Moringa is grown in home gardens as living fences in South and Southeast Asia. In the Philippines and Indonesia, it is commonly grown for its leaves, which are used as food. Moringa is the ancient and Biblical “Tree of Life” described in the Book of Exodus 15:20-25. Its seeds are still used around the world today to purify water as Moses is believed to have at Mt. Sinai. The water purifying power of the seeds is confirmed by modern science. Moringa has twice the protein of yogurt, 4 times the calcium of milk, 25 times the iron of spinach, 15 times the potassium of bananas, 4 times the vitamin A of carrots, and 7 times the vitamin C of oranges. The various parts of moringa that are edible are the immature seed pods (called “drumsticks”), leaves, mature seeds, oil pressed from the seeds, flowers, and roots. The leaves are the most nutritious parts, being a significant source of B vitamins, vitamin C, provitamin A as beta-carotene, vitamin K, manganese, calcium, and protein. Moringa seeds are removed from mature pods, cut, and cooked. In Nigeria, they are prized for their bitter flavor, commonly added to sauces or eaten as a fried snack. The seed oil is used in condiments or dressings. The fruit pods are prepared by partially boiling, cut into shorter lengths, then cooked in a curry or soup until soft. The roots are shredded and used as a condiment with sharp flavor qualities. The flowers are typically cooked into chorchori and fritters. The leaves are edible both raw or cooked, and have many culinary uses, similar to spinach. Rich in vitamins A, E, and C, as well as fatty acids, Moringa oil (cold pressed from moringa seeds) is used as a food supplement, as a base for cosmetics, and for hair and the skin. Moringa oil can be used to moisturize, cleanse, and treat acne. It can help with dry skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis, and be applied to minor cuts and burns. Moringa oil can be used to treat hair by nourishing hair follicles, promoting a healthy scalp, and strengthening hair strands. It can also be used to lock in moisture after washing hair. The oil contains fatty acid compounds and antioxidants that improve blood circulation in the scalp, nourishing hair follicles, and stimulating hair growth. It is an excellent natural conditioner that can help improve hair manageability, reduce the appearance of frizz, and promote brilliant shine. Moringa oil can be used to soothe cracked cuticles and nourish nails by massaging it into the nail beds or adding it to hand lotion. Moringa seeds were used as a remedy for depression in ancient cultures, revered for their ability to give energy and overcome feelings of hopelessness. The seeds were believed to renew the spirit and reinvigorate the body mentally and emotionally. Moringa is rich in phytosterols like stigmasterol, sitosterol and kampesterol which are precursors for hormones. These compounds increase estrogen production, which in turn stimulate the proliferation of the mammary gland ducts to produce milk and may also help relieve symptoms of menopause. Moringa oil is a carrier oil and does not require dilution. Historical Uses:  dermatitis, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, irritated skin, dry hair, hair growth, healthy scalp, abrasions, grazes, scrapes, cuts, minor burns, cuticles, fingernails Mystical Attributes:  In Bali, moringa is planted around the house to ward off evil. In the Banyuwangi region across the straight from Bali, it is common for a host to serve a bowl of simple moringa leaf soup to a guest or visiting stranger as a potent protection from evil spirits and bad intentions. Moringa is used as an amulet against dark forces when carried in the pocket, hung above the door, or planted around the house. In West Java, it is used to purify and cleanse dead bodies before burial. Mystical Intentions:  hope, emotional balance, cleansing, purification, funeral and burial rituals Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Moringa is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree, native to the Indian subcontinent and used extensively in South and Southeast Asia. It is grown mainly in semi-arid, tropical, and subtropical areas, corresponding to USDA hardiness zones 9 and 10. It can reach a height of 33-39 feet, with a trunk diameter of 18 inches. The bark of the moringa tree has a whitish-gray color and is surrounded by thick cork. Young shoots have purplish or greenish-white, hairy bark. The tree has an open crown of drooping, fragile branches, and the leaves build up a feathery foliage of tripinnate leaves. Moringa flowers are fragrant and hermaphroditic, surrounded by five unequal, thinly veined, yellowish-white petals. The flowers are about 3/8 – 5/8 inches long and ¾ inch broad. They grow on slender, hairy stalks in spreading or drooping flower clusters, which have a length of 4-10 inches. Flowering begins within the first six months of planting. In seasonally cool regions, flowering only occurs once a year in late spring and early summer (Northern Hemisphere between April and June, Southern Hemisphere between October and December). In more constant seasonal temperatures and with constant rainfall, flowering can happen twice or even year-round. The fruit is a hanging, three-sided, brown, 8 to 17-1/2 inch capsule, which holds dark brown, globular seeds with a diameter of around 1 cm. The seeds have three whitish, papery wings and are dispersed by wind and water. In cultivation, it is often cut back annually to 3-6 feet and allowed to regrow so the pods and leaves remain within arm’s reach. Moringa can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, but prefers a neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6.3 to 7.0), well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. In waterlogged soil, the roots have a tendency to rot. Moringa is a sun and heat-loving plant, and does not tolerate freezing or frost. It is particularly suitable for dry regions and can be grown using rainwater without expensive irrigation techniques. Moringa can be propagated from seed or cuttings. Direct seeding is possible because the germination rate is high. Moringa seeds can be germinated year-round in well-drained soil. Cuttings of 3 feet long and at least 1-1/2 inches diameter can be used for vegetative propagation. When the plant is grown from cuttings, the first harvest can take place 6-8 months after planting. Often, the fruits are not produced in the first year, and the yield is generally low during the first few years. By year two, it produces around 300 pods, by year three around 400-500. A good tree can yield 1,000 or more pods. The leaves and stems can be harvested from the young plants 60 days after seeding and then another seven times in the year. At every harvest, the plants are cut back to within 2 feet of the ground. In some systems, the leaves are harvested every 2 weeks. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. It is unsafe to use the root, bark, or flowers, which might make the uterus contract and has been used historically to cause miscarriage. May cause skin irritation. Ingestion of moringa may worsen hypothyroidism. Moringa may change how some medications are broken down by the liver. Using moringa along with levothyroxine might decrease the effects of the medication. Moringa may lower blood sugar levels and should not be used by those with diabetic conditions. Use of high amounts of moringa can cause or worsen hemochromatosis, a condition that occurs when there is too much iron in the body. Consuming excessive amounts of moringa can cause gastrointestinal distress.   Constituents: Flavonol glycosides (glycosides, rutinosides, and malonyl glucosides) of quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin Myricetin Phenolic acids Carotenoids (lutein, β-carotene, zeaxanthin)     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
